Pizza Hut’s branding endeavors hit the bull’s eye more often than not.
Their panormous deal is a brilliant concept right down to the name. According to revelation by the senior marking manager of Pizza Hut saira, these deals are geared towards the lower SECs, to entice them to try this upscale delicacy at an affordable price. The only problem is, even these discount deals are expensive for the working class to have a go at. Instead, the people who end up consuming them are the relatively upper SECs.
Isn’t that good? At least some segment of the target market is coming in, keeping the place buzzing. Unfortunately, that is a fairly myopic strategy. It works wonders in the short-term, there’s no question about it. The only problem is, it dilutes the brand essence in the long term.
How? Consider this. The consumers who end up consuming these discount deals are the same ones who have already tried the actual product, the one with superior quality and no shortcuts either in size or quality. So when they have a go at the discounted stuff, they find it below par, coming to the conclusion that the brand has resorted to cheating for good. Eventually they will stop buying the brand once a strong competitor offers just a wee bit better quality.
We tested the new ‘panormous’ pizza. When you strip away all the hype, it all comes down to the same old thing, which is a good thing. You shouldn’t wander too much from your core offering, offering essentially the core product in innovative ways. The problem in this case is, the square pan pizza doesn’t come down to the good old stuff. It just doesn’t compare to the real pizza.
For starters, the crust is way too thick and the filling way too thin to tantalize your taste buds. For the most part, you feel as if you are eating plain baked bread. No doubt the bread is soft and all that, but the consumer isn’t paying the premium price for the bread, isn’t it?
Then, true to pizza hut’s historical fallacy, the sides were lacking any filling whatsoever. The snapshots will showcase these troubled spots. A minor glitch was the absence of butter paper to avoid the topping getting plastered to the top of the box. Sure there were these small circular objects placed to prevent this from happening, and yet it did, which is depicted in the snap.
Finally, there was something sinister about the quality of the topping ingredients. It wouldn’t have come out had I not tried one of the leftover pieces the next day.
I have eaten Pizza hut’s pizza the next day a million times, in fact sometimes a couple of days later and it will always tastes good enough. This time however, the very next day there was a foul taste, very subtle, but there alright. Microwave has been the mode of heating each time, so it’s not that it was a result of that. This could only mean that fresh ingredients weren’t used which resulted in the pizza not retaining its original flavor the next day.
The two pan pizzas we tried were chicken tikka and supreme. And both were guilty of not having enough topping, at least enough compared to the normal pizza to approve of them. Taste-wise there wasn’t much difference from the original pizza.
Pizza Hut is a great brand and although discount deals are the order of the day, it should tread this path with extreme caution if it’s to save its brand essence from diluting.
